What the data shows

The strongest New Jersey counties for a large AI load are Middlesex County (64), Salem County (56) and Hudson County (56) on the site score. New Jersey sits in PJM and NYISO; its ISO queues hold 34 GW of active generation and storage requests, 2.8 GW of them with a signed interconnection agreement, and it has 19 substations at 345 kV and up.

Industrial power averaged 15.2¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026 YTD), against 13.7¢/kWh a year earlier, the 41st lowest of the 50 states and DC. New Jersey has no data center-specific sales tax exemption. We track 2 AI campuses and 30 GPU-ready colocation facilities here.

Data center tax exemption in New Jersey

No data center-specific sales tax exemption found. New Jersey's data center incentive was a tax credit, not a sales tax exemption: the Next New Jersey Program-AI (A4558/S3432, 2024) offered tax credits for large-scale AI data centers, and the 2026 End Data Center Tax Credits Act (A5165/S4390) ended the remaining uncommitted credits for new data centers while leaving CoreWeave's existing award in place.

Recent change: June 2026: NJEDA paused applications for the Next New Jersey Program-AI tax credit; the Legislature passed the End Data Center Tax Credits Act (A5165/S4390) on June 30, 2026, and Gov. Sherrill signed it in late August 2026, ending new credits for data centers.

Large-load requests in PJM

PJM forecasts its summer peak at 222,106 MW in 2036, up 65,733 MW in ten years, with large load adjustments for data center growth in 14 transmission zones, including Dominion (Virginia), AEP, ComEd and PECO. Near-term adjustments now require firm commitments, so they came down from the 2025 forecast. PJM, Jan 14, 2026

How the score works

Six parts out of 100: transmission (25), generation in the queue (20), the state's industrial power price (20), existing and retiring plants (15), sales tax exemption (10) and data center activity (10). The site finder's methodology prints each formula and every source with its date. Markets: PJM (Mid-Atlantic and Midwest), NYISO (New York).
