What a lessor might book

Our residual value report concludes that a lessor writing a fair market value lease books at the low end of the conservative band, because it has to turn the residual into cash at lease end. For a 36-month B300 lease signed in 2026, that is 28% of the original price.

Earnings per year and payback

One HGX B300 server bought at $425,000 (new, the midpoint of the October 2026 Rack Report new-price range of $400K-$450K), rented out from month 4.

  • On-demand: managedgpus.com short-term preset, 80% of hours billed, falling 10% a year.
  • Power: 15.5 kW per server, the managedgpus.com sizing for this server; colocation all-in at $280 per kW a month from month one.
  • Fees: Managed GPUs' $25,000 setup and $1,000 a month management; shipping $2,500. One server needs no cluster network.
  • Payback: months after going live until cumulative cash covers the purchase and fees, before resale. Resale after three years: 41% of the purchase price (midpoint of the 2029 residual band forecast, 28-54% of the price new).

In-situ vs ex-situ value

Installed under a three-year contract, an HGX B300 node has an income value of about $779K, 183% of its new price (present value of 36 months of rent at the managedgpus.com $4.60 contract preset, every hour billed, net of colocation only (before setup and management fees), plus a resale value at the midpoint of the conservative band when the term ends, discounted at 12%). Removed and sold today, our bands put it at 78-89% of the price new. No used HGX B300 sales exist yet to put a dollar figure on it. That income value is above the $425K it costs to buy the server new, so it is not an equipment value: equipment in continued use is normally worth no more than the cost to replace it new and installed, and the excess is the value of the contract, which lasts only while the customer pays.

In-situ vs ex-situ GPU value has the definitions and every server side by side.

Methodology and sources

How the figures are built

New prices are the October 2026 Rack Report's new-equipment benchmarks. Until used HGX B300 sales are enough to publish a median, we show the residual bands as a share of the price new and no dollar value.

Residual bands are by calendar year, measured against the original price, from our June 2026 report, GPU Residual Value: Underwriting a $3 Trillion Opportunity. The bands are forecasts. Earnings use the managedgpus.com calculator's math and defaults; new servers are priced at the Rack Report new-price midpoint. Every figure is computed from the data at build time and moves with each monthly issue.
